Pillars of My Kingdom

By Sinang Lee, Poly High School

"...I recently visited Cambodia and in the province of Siem Reap is where I found what my heart had sought. The forests, though somewhat diminished, still exuded its vitality to me with rhythmic raindrops and scavenging monkeys, as I entered it. It is this kingdom of tall trees, some of them ancient, with a sky of canopy which brings me to my roots. Having been raised among trees precisely planted to line a street or shape a park, the natural wilderness of our country made me feel true to my heart. I finally realized my true home—not in America, but rather among pillars of where I was born."

I walked barefoot
Above dampened ground,
Covered by a thin silver sheet.
My heart sought what it had found.
I have not seen
These pillars of bark,
Rising high through the clouds of green,
Before; never in parks.
I was happy
In my own Kingdom.
Jewels of light in the canopy
Set my soul to freedom.
