Contributing authors...

By MiSokun

Many of us are familiar with Khmer Voice: The Cambodian Literary Connection and its contents. It is a journal written by Khmers which highlights works written by young, old, male, and female writers. We also hope to receive works written in Khmer. Khmer Voice would like to introduce our contributing authors and their accomplishments.

Nature. That is the word which best represents me, Sinang Lee. This love of mine is evident in the poems and stories that I write. My special love for the rainforests is a tribute to my homeland, Cambodia. I have no memories of living there but through the stories told by my parents. I can imagine myself there. Growing up being the only girl, I did not have much in common with my three older brothers. I resorted to my imagination to explore worlds through reading, writing, and drawing. There are many reasons why I write, but there is only one reason why I love to write. Through writing, I can express my loves, my fears, and my hopes with ease. My mind has a greater connection to my fingers than to my mouth. Those words scribbled down on paper become my voice, silent but true.

Presently, I am a senior at Polytech High School in Long Beach, CA.

I will be the editor-in-chief for the school’s literary magazine called Acacia. I plan to attend college and major in Comparative Literature. I will continue to write.

Desolate Palace
by Sinang Lee, Polytech High
Long Beach, CA

Night has fallen.
I’ll run to the desolate palace,
fleeing to the world’s end,
far end of the earth,
where my wings ride up
the twisted whirlwind,
to the soaring moon.

I will stand alone, serene above fate.
The sky and reluctant stars,
jewels in the hollow sky,
where the cliff breaks toward heaven.

Silence.
I breathe,
under the twilight,
in this some kind of place,
I am happy.
